Coach Peter Usset: Building a Legacy of Excellence at the 2025 All State Game

The All State Game is honored to welcome Coach Peter Usset, Head Football Coach at Apple Valley High School (MN), as a confirmed coach for the 2025 All State Game. With over 15 years of coaching experience, Coach Usset has cultivated a reputation as a visionary leader, dedicated to player development, program growth, and building a strong football culture from the ground up.

A Multi-Sport Background Rooted in Leadership

Coach Usset’s athletic journey began as a three-sport standout in high school, excelling in football, hockey, and baseball. His athletic talents earned him the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level at Hamline University in St. Paul, where he was a multi-sport athlete and three-year captain of the football team. In 2008, he was recognized as the team’s Defensive MVP as a Linebacker, and his athletic versatility extended to the track, where he was a two-time All-MIAC selection in the Javelin Throw.

His time at Hamline laid the groundwork for a coaching philosophy built on leadership, work ethic, and a love for the process of development.

Transforming the Apple Valley Football Program

Since becoming Head Coach at Apple Valley High School, Coach Usset has spearheaded a remarkable transformation. In just three seasons, the program has grown from 60 to 122 players, with a renewed energy and culture built on accountability, strength, and development.

In 2023, the team reached the Section Championship, and the freshman team posted its best record in over a decadewith an 8-3 finish. Usset’s trust in young talent was clear when the program’s top freshman started every snap on the varsity defense, a testament to both player preparation and coaching confidence.

Coach Usset is also deeply committed to building a sustainable pipeline for the future. He has been instrumental in creating a football-specific strength, speed, and skill training program for middle school athletes, ensuring consistency across all levels of the Apple Valley system. Over the past three summers, Apple Valley’s 6th-8th grade teams trained with the varsity staff, participating in 4-day-a-week sessions focused on physical development, combined with football skills and scheme camps.

This commitment has paid off, with all three youth teams (6th, 7th, 8th grades) achieving winning seasons and the 7th grade team capturing a league championship.

A Coach with Vision and Versatility

Prior to becoming Head Coach, Usset held a wide range of leadership roles including Defensive Coordinator, Linebackers Coach, Safeties Coach, and Special Teams Coordinator. His ability to lead across all facets of the game speaks to his deep understanding of football and his drive to create complete athletes and cohesive teams.

Coach Usset’s passion lies in football-specific strength and speed development, believing that every athlete has the potential to reach new levels with the right guidance, structure, and effort. His holistic approach ensures that players under his direction grow not only in skill but also in confidence, discipline, and leadership.

Family, Football, and Future Focused

Coach Usset resides in Inver Grove Heights, MN, with his wife Katie and their two children, McKenna (9) and Thomas (8). The Usset family is deeply rooted in the local sports community and is excited for a summer filled with football, learning, and shared memories.

As he joins the coaching staff at the 2025 All State Game, Coach Usset brings more than just experience—he brings a proven track record of program development, athlete mentorship, and competitive success.
